The Bangladesh Jiban Bima Corporation (JBC) is the only state-owned life insurance corporation in Bangladesh. It plays a vital role in providing life insurance services to the citizens of Bangladesh and was established in the aftermath of the country’s independence to bring the life insurance industry under government regulation and control.

• Founded: May 14, 1973, under the Bangladesh Corporation Act 1973.

• Origin: Formed by merging two nationalized life insurance companies — Surma Life Insurance Corporation and Rupsa Life Insurance Corporation, which themselves emerged from the nationalization of the life insurance industry in 1972.

• Before independence, there were 75 insurance companies operating in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), with only 10 registered locally.
