Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited (BSCL) is a government-owned entity responsible for operating and managing Bangladesh’s first geostationary communications satellite, Bangabandhu-1. Established in August 2017, BSCL operates under the Post and Telecommunications Division of the Government of Bangladesh.
Bangabandhu-1 Satellite:
- Launch: Bangabandhu-1 was launched on May 11, 2018, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket from the Kennedy Space Center in the United States.
- Coverage: The satellite provides telecommunications and broadcasting services across Bangladesh and neighboring regions, including parts of Southeast Asia and the Bay of Bengal.
- Capacity: It carries 40 transponders in Ku-band and C-band, offering a combined capacity of 1,600 megahertz.
Operational Challenges: Despite its advanced capabilities, BSCL has faced financial challenges. The company has reported annual losses of approximately Tk 60 crore, primarily due to expenditures surpassing revenues. As of mid-2024, BSCL had not contributed any profits to the national treasury, with the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) covering satellite-related expenses through loans and payments.
Recent Developments: In early 2025, BSCL expressed interest in partnering with satellite internet providers like Starlink. The company aims to collaborate by routing satellite internet services through its ground stations, potentially enhancing internet connectivity in Bangladesh.
