Bandarban Hill District Council (BHDC)

The Bandarban Hill District Council is a regional government body in the Bandarban District, part of the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) region of Bangladesh. It was established under the Hill District Council Act of 1989, with the aim of promoting the welfare and development of the indigenous communities in the region.

Current Structure and Leadership

As of November 2024, following a three-month vacancy, the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs formed a new interim council.

• Professor Thanzama Lusai was appointed as the new Chairman.

• The council consists of 15 members, representing a diverse mix:

  • 7 Indigenous members

  • 3 Bengali women

  • 3 Bengali men

  • 2 other women from indigenous communities

Functions and Responsibilities

The BHDC is responsible for local governance and development activities in Bandarban, including:

• Education

• Healthcare

• Infrastructure development

• Agricultural support

• Cultural preservation

• Social welfare programs

Following the Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Accord, the council has been further empowered and continues to operate under the oversight of the national government.
