Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) is a state-owned public transportation agency under the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges. Established in 1961, BRTC is responsible for providing and maintaining public transport services across Bangladesh.

Fleet and Services:
As of February 2024, BRTC operates a fleet of approximately 1,350 buses, with 1,253 in active service. The corporation also manages 170 cargo trucks, serving both domestic and international routes. BRTC operates inter-district bus services through depots in cities such as Chittagong, Bogura, Comilla, Pabna, Rangpur, Barisal, and Sylhet. Additionally, it runs intra-city bus services in major cities and international routes to Kolkata, Agartala, and Siliguri in India.

Modernization Efforts:
BRTC is working to modernize its fleet by procuring new buses. A project to acquire 340 CNG-run AC buses has been approved, and additional projects for purchasing 600 more buses are pending approval. The corporation is also investing in driver training programs to meet the growing demand for skilled drivers.

Challenges and Improvements:
Despite efforts to modernize, BRTC has faced challenges with maintaining its fleet. Between 2009 and 2019, the corporation purchased 1,558 buses; however, many of these vehicles became unserviceable due to inadequate maintenance. As of early 2025, 343 of these buses were declared beyond economic repair and sold as scrap.

Public Offerings:
In 2020, the Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation Bill was passed, allowing the government to offload 49% of BRTC’s shares to the public, aiming to enhance efficiency and transparency.
