The Bangladesh Sericulture Development Board (BSDB), established in 1978 under Presidential Ordinance 1977, is a regulatory authority dedicated to the advancement of sericulture—the cultivation of silkworms for silk production—in Bangladesh. Headquartered in Rajshahi, the board plays a pivotal role in promoting and overseeing the silk industry within the country.
Key Objectives of BSDB:
-
Planning and Development: Formulating strategies for the growth and enhancement of sericulture and the silk industry.
-
Research and Training: Conducting and supporting scientific, technological, and economic research, as well as providing training in sericulture practices.
-
Cultivation Improvement: Developing improved methods for cultivating mulberry, castor, and other related plants essential for sericulture.
The BSDB manages an extensive network comprising 14 nurseries, 39 centers, and 159 sub-centers across various regions of Bangladesh. These facilities are instrumental in expanding sericulture activities to 48 districts and 202 upazilas, resulting in the planting of approximately 10 million mulberry trees. This expansion has generated employment opportunities for over 5 million individuals, with cocoon production surpassing one million kilograms.
In addition to its developmental initiatives, the BSDB oversees the Bangladesh Sericulture Research and Training Institute (BSRTI). The BSRTI is the sole institution in the country specializing in silk research, having developed several high-yielding mulberry plant varieties and silkworm breeds.
The BSDB’s efforts have significantly contributed to the prominence of Rajshahi silk, renowned for its high-quality fabric used in clothing, particularly saris. In 2021, Rajshahi silk was granted Geographical Indication (GI) status, recognizing its unique heritage and quality.
