The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) is the national regulatory authority responsible for overseeing and regulating all telecommunications services in Bangladesh, including wireline, wireless, satellite, and cable communications. Established on 31 January 2002 under the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Act, 2001, BTRC operates as an independent commission with the authority to regulate the sector, protect consumer interests, and promote the development of telecommunications in the country.

Appointed on 10 September 2024, Major General Bari brings extensive experience in military communications and telecommunications regulation

Key Functions

BTRC’s primary responsibilities include:

Regulation and Licensing: Issuing licenses for telecom services and ensuring compliance with regulations.
Consumer Protection: Safeguarding consumer interests regarding service quality, pricing, and access.
Infrastructure Development: Promoting the expansion and modernization of telecom infrastructure.
Spectrum Management: Allocating and managing the radio frequency spectrum.
Policy Advocacy: Advising the government on telecom policy and strategy

Recent Initiatives

Quality of Service (QoS) Enhancements: In January 2025, BTRC introduced stricter QoS benchmarks for mobile operators, including reducing the call drop rate ceiling from 2% to 1% and setting new standards for call setup times.
Telecom Licensing Reforms: BTRC initiated reforms to streamline the telecom licensing process, aiming to eliminate intermediaries and reduce costs for consumers.
