Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) established in 1993 is the leading private university in Bangladesh with an explicit focus on Research and Global partnerships. We are a full service, meritocratically elite university with a current enrollment of 7,378 students, 11,556 alumni and 401 faculty members (of which 38% have Ph.D.’s mostly from North America).
IUB Campus
The IUB campus sprawling over 3 acres, has an amphitheater, the state-of-the-art laboratories, well-equipped library with online access to journals and books, above 70 classrooms, lecture galleries, auditorium, gymnasium, food court, playground, medical Center, counseling Center and an alumni office. IUB also has dormitory facilities for female students from outside Dhaka and foreign students and a guest-house for visiting scholars.
The faculty members of IUB are actively engaged in research and publish regularly in peer-reviewed journals. Along with conventional classroom based teaching, students are engaged in research relatively early in their studies. IUB has academic research collaborations with various universities including Harvard University, Stanford University, University of Colorado at Boulder, Brown University, McMaster University, University of Heidelberg, University of South Alabama, Southern Illinois University, University of Vermont, University of Minnesota, Aga Khan University, Institute of Psychiatry in Pakistan, Public Health Foundation of India, Institute for Research and Development, Sri Lanka.
Academic Programs
Our academic curriculum is based on a North American liberal arts model and the medium of instruction is English. We currently have six academic schools: School of Business, School of Engineering and Computer Science, School of Environmental Sciences and Management, School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, School of Life Sciences and School of Public Health. IUB is rapidly expanding its portfolio and is in the process of introducing Architecture and Biotechnology.
Academic Terms & Admission
IUB has three academic terms: spring, summer and autumn with classes commencing in January, May and September respectively. Admission tests are conducted in November, April and July, two months prior to the beginning of each term.
Financial Aid & Student Employment
Independent University, Bangladesh strongly believes that financial circumstances should never keep eligible students away from great achievements. The Financial Aid Office of IUB gives high priority to financial aid and the university has a standing commitment to meet the financial need of eligible students.
The FINANCIAL AID PROGRAM of IUB in accordance with the Private University Act 2010 offers financial aid/scholarship on tuition fees in the following categories:
100% waiver on Admission test result, 100% waiver on previous academic attainment, 20%-100% waiver based on need and merit of a student, up to 100% waiver for wards of freedom fighters, 50% waiver on siblings & spouse studying together at IUB, 10% discount for Female students and 50% waiver for Employee of IUB or their dependents.
Employment opportunity for students in the form of financial benefit is also provided as they can work as Student on Duty (SOD) or Teaching Assistant (TA), Graduate Assistant (GA).
Financial Aid for graduate Programs vary according to the policies set by respective schools.

IUB is committed to broadly diverse student community in terms of race, geography, gender, special skills and talent.
100% tuition scholarship with free board and lodging is provided at IUB “Saima Hall” to meritorious underprivileged female students from outside Dhaka in association with Shaheed Khalek & Major Salek Bir Uttam Trust.
Live-in-Field Experience
IUB’s pioneering Program, Live-in-Field Experience, a 3-credit Program mandatory for all undergraduate students, gives a distinctive opportunity to learn about rural life, complement the unique course, National Culture and Heritage, a comprehensive study of the history, society and culture of Bangladesh. The LFE Program received acclamation from home and abroad.
2+2 Programs
Moreover, IUB has established 2+2 Programs with University of South Alabama, Southern Illinois University, University of South Australia and Griffith College. Under these Programs students can complete 2 years of an undergraduate major at IUB and then transfer to the respective partner university to complete the remaining 2 years.
Co-Curricular Activities
Apart from academics, IUB puts a strong emphasis on co-curricular activities and provides unlimited opportunities to enhance their aesthetics talent and skills.
The Division of Student Affairs (DoSA) oversees all and coordinates all student activities including the 17 clubs: Art Club, Bangla Club, Book Club, Debating Club, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Film Club, International Affairs Club, Music Club, Photography Club, Theatre Club, BSS Club, CECS Club, ENV Club, Jukti Club, Economics Club, Monte Carlo Information Club, IEEE IUB Student Branch. Students are also encouraged throughout their stay at IUB to participate in community services Programs like blood donation, distribution of warm clothes in winter, fund raising for flood victims and victims of natural disasters etc. to promote leadership and personal growth.
Visiting Scholars
IUB is the leading host institution for Fulbright scholars in Bangladesh. We have had a steady flow of scholars from American and Canadian universities spending one semester to a year at IUB.
