The Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives (MLGRD&C) is a pivotal ministry within the Government of Bangladesh, tasked with overseeing local governance, rural development, and cooperative organizations. ​

Structure and Divisions:

The ministry is organized into two primary divisions:​

1. Local Government Division (LGD): This division is responsible for the development and support of local government bodies, including Union Councils, Upazila Parishads, Zila Parishads, City Corporations, and Municipalities. ​

2. Rural Development and Co-operatives Division (RDCD): This division focuses on formulating policies and implementing programs aimed at alleviating rural poverty through cooperative-based activities, micro-credit support, and human resource development. ​

Key Responsibilities:

• Policy Formulation: Developing laws and policies related to rural development and cooperatives. ​

• Program Implementation: Executing projects to reduce rural poverty and support cooperative enterprises. ​

• Support for Local Government Bodies: Assisting various local government institutions in delivering public services and infrastructure development. ​

Affiliated Organizations:

The ministry supervises several key agencies, including:​

• Local Government Engineering Department (LGED): Handles the construction and maintenance of rural and urban infrastructure. ​

• Bangladesh Rural Development Board (BRDB): The largest government agency dedicated to rural development, focusing on cooperative-based activities. ​

• Department of Cooperatives: Regulates and supports cooperative societies across the country. ​
